Kilowog, Green Lantern of Space Sector 674

In DC’s “The Sinestro Corps War” crossover, each Green Lantern and Green Lantern Corps issue juggles multiple alien characters who wield power rings, either green or yellow, engaged in an epic battle. One of my favorites of these aliens is this big guy, Kilowog.

I’ve been anxious to kick-start my comic portfolio with some new work as well as get back into Illustration Friday, so I’m afraid I can only loosely associate this with this week’s I.F. word, “juggle.”

Out of necessity, I inked this using Illustrator CS2. I may never go back to pens! An inking tutorial at DaniDraws.com helped me get started.

(Have you seen Dani Draws.com? A doggone excellent source of art/cartooning-related tutorials, tips and info. Here’s a great tutorial on using digital textures - keep those illustrations from looking too Photoshopped.)

I’m getting into a traditional cel animation look. If I can improve my speed, I’ll try to produce some comic pages like this.

  • Check out Green Lantern Corps (vol. 2) #15 for Kilowog’s big fight in the Sinestro Corps War.

Nice! Sufficiently beefy…heh heh. The character is great but I have to say the background draws my interest just as much! Love the “sketchy” space scene behind him. That’s the painter in me coming out though.

I’ve inked a few things in Illustrator, but have found it to be a bit unwieldy for line work. I think a lot of that just comes from not doing it enough though! I’ll have to try and utilize it more. Not just ink and go for the “line trace” thing.

Keep it up brother, you inspire me and I should be trying to do more in my off hours as well!

Thanks, bud! Remember the “Dragon’s Lair” game at Showbiz Pizza? The one that got all of our quarters (tokens)? The animation in that game is still a major influence on me. Those we’re good times.

I still suck at it.

I did another ink-job in Illustrator and I’m hooked. Definitely worth giving it another chance. Thanks for the comments!

Hoooo hooo, do I remember?!? Oh man, boy do I! Good times my friend, good times. Do you remember Street Fighter at the mall? Sheesh, how embarrassing. I think I have a vague recollection of wearing biking gloves while playing that game! LOL LOL! Ahhh, young and completely stupid. In my defense though, they were big buttons, and I was on the game a long time. I mean those blisters were killer! All that hitting and…punching…and jabb…ing…yeah. You’re right. Completely retarded. Heh heh.

I saw this on the DC boards. Do you ever post on the ComicBloc forums? There’s a Crit forum there that is pretty active. Plus a lot of good GL talk. It is Geoff Johns homebase after all.

Great stuff BTW. Also good to see you have your head on straight about which GL is best, Kyle of course.

Thanks for the idea, J’osh. That’s exactly what I was looking for, I just didn’t know where to look.

Yes, for me it’s not even close - Kyle is my favorite. You don’t think DC will mess him up too badly with this Parallax deal, do you?

I’m not sure how many books you pick up or how closely you follow comics in general but Kyle is already fine. We still don’t know how he got to that point but he is already adventureing with Donna Troy over in Countdown. And he’ll begin appearing with Guy in the GLC book regularly in December.

On the one hand it’s kinda sucky to have the suspense broken but with the way DC characters drop like fly’s nowadays it nice to know Kyle makes it. I saw Geoff Johns at a the Philly con awhile back and said he likes Kyle alot so he’s in good hands.

I see you found the ComicBloc forums based on your response on the DC boards, glad you like them. Those DC boards are awful. I just started going. Very little MOD intervention going on there.

Hey I also popped by to drop you a link.

http://www.isleofdread.com - It’s my best friends Nate Bliss’s homepage he attended Savannah College of Art and Design. He’s very good I thought you might like it. He has a poster up there he did for our upcoming local convention.

Take care and I’ll pop by now and again. I go by moonleming on ComicBloc see ya around the boards.

This is such a self-portrait.

:P

That’s what you get for missing my Ghost Hunters viewing party, turd!

@J’osh - I had no idea the timing was so screwed up in DC’s release schedule. I haven’t been reading Countdown. I have to say I’m pretty disappointed. It’s like hearing that Han was seen dancing with Ewoks right when I’m watching him be lowered into the carbonite chamber.

or something.

Anyway, thanks for the cool link! You’ll see me around the ComicBloc boards quite a bit.

@Pitt - See, I KNEW you would call me names! Besides, they didn’t find any ghosts. As usual.
