Mal annoys a motley bulbous cashier

For a few days, I’ll be posting my sketches for panels. After awhile I’ll post full pages, but I’m building up slowly. I’m looking for criticism, particularly on style consistency, likenesses and energy in the drawings. Much obliged!

Firefly Dead or Alive - p1.p1

Firefly: Dead or Alive Pg.1, Pan.1, 11/30/07

Script

A motley group of immigrant workers walk down the ramp onto the dirt of a border planet. MAL and an equally motley bulbous man, the CASHIER, count them as they walk off.

MAL
Thirteen. Fourteen. Fifteen.
Seventeen.

CASHIER
(bored)
Sixteen.

November ‘07 at the Glimbit Blog

Oh sweet but gray November, how brown your ground, how chilly your wind. Yet, you were kind to the Glimbit blog and website. Let’s see, what highlights …

  • We learned how one illustrator, after 20-some years, saw his childhood ideas in print and in the hands of kids everywhere.
  • Our faith in fortune cookies was weakened.
  • There’s more to drawing a likeness that putting the eyes and nose in the right place.
  • They’re really up on Pilgrims in Plymouth.

Also, it was “National Blog Posting Month.” To participate, you post at least once everyday for 30 days. I’m happy to say I posted everyday. I posted a sketch almost every day, no matter how crappy it was.

And there’s even more to review:

  • The new Glimbit website
  • Top November posts
  • Gutentag World!
  • Strange search terms
  • Spamalot
  • What’s Next?

Illustration Friday - The Zoe

It was a great coincidence that this week’s Illustration Friday topic was also the name of one of the Firefly characters I’ve been drawing lately. Kind of a strange topic, but I’ll take it.

painting of Zoe from Firefly

“I can hurt you.” 11/29/07

Just added some Illustrator inks and a little color to it. Thanks for the feedback on the drawing, Angela and Dan. I said it was welcome and you took me up on it. It’s always appreciated.

The nice thing about inking in Illustrator is being able to manipulate the lines directly without redrawing them, so when I saw that her hands were too masculine, for example, it was easy to shrink them down a bit. Same with her beefy arms.

I’m just glad this drawing worked out for Illustration Friday this week.

Update: Ah, looks like I may have misread the topic. My apologies.

Zoe sketch

sketch of zoe v2

“Sir, I think you have a problem with your brain being missing.” 11/28/07

Update: I went in and changed some stuff around. Tried to fix the weirdness and tried to draw her real gun. I left the old image. You can see it after the jump.

Firefly - Dead or Alive, thumbnails p1-4

I’ve been meaning to post some thumbnails for the comic pages I’m currently working on. The thumbs are from an unfilmed script for Firefly, “Dead or Alive.” I’ve posted the script pages after the jump.

Dead or Alive, p1-4, 11/27/07

These pages will be portfolio pieces, intended to show some likenesses and done in the traditional animation style that I’ve been toying with for a few months.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer - sketch

sketch of Buffy the Vampire Slayer

“I can beat up the demons until the cows come home… and then I can beat up the cows.” 11/27/07

What I’ve been doing lately is drawing a first sketch from a photo and then trying to draw from imagination using what I learned in the first sketch. My goal is to be able to get a likeness of the character, but still keep a loose, personal style.

I’ve only watched a handful of episodes from the 1st and 2nd seasons of Buffy, but I’ve heard they get really good from 3 and on. Looking forward to catching up with this series sometime.
