Teen Titans penciling sample: Splash! Cyborg awakens.

Final pencils for sample Teen Titans page 01

Pencils for a sample Teen Titans page, 01/06/08

After the jump, (after you click “more,”) I’ve posted the script, thumbnails and the rough drawing. I would cherish hearing/reading feedback. Thanks!

Script Page

Teen Titans #34 – Geoff Johns

PAGE FOUR.

SPLASH

And now a straight on, reverse angle of the first three pages revealing in full view, from head to toe, CYBORG. He wakes up, stepping off and out of a large platform. There are cables connected to Cyborg and into the large machinery behind him. Some of them for power, fuel and information.

TITLE: NEW TEEN TITANS PART I
TITLE: ONE YEAR LATER

I went with a design that would put the title and credits on the monitors and machinery panels behind him.

The rough is pretty close to the final. I wasn’t sure how I would do the final pencils so I just kept drawing.

Whoa! That’s a kick ass composition!
The foreshortening is spot-on.
I would love to see what it looks like actual size to get the full effect of your line work.
Good stuff EMS.

Thanks man! You mentioned line-work, and one thing I’m trying to do here is stick to line in the pencils and not add a bunch of blacks.

A couple of my favorite pencilers do this, Steve Skroce and Renato Guedes to name two. I’m uncertain what comic book editors think of this approach, or if they prefer to see lots of darks in the pencils.

Hey dude…honestly…this is one of the best drawings I’ve seen you post on the blog yet. Really, really nice line work and a nice dramatic pose. Very interesting to look at. The background is really nice as well, love the environment. Not too much, not too little. Your choice between the thumbnails you posted is definitely the best.

Great work, you keep this up we’ll see you in funny papers yet kemosabe!

Ditto on everything that’s been said. This is awesome!!
I like how the stronger lines separate him from the background, and make him look so crisp.
The background details are so intriguing that I want to see the whole setting. Great facial expression too!

There are some cheesy scifi things going on back there. He’s covering up most of it, which is probably for the best.

I appreciate the kind words, A!
