Boy Wonder asks for his check

sketch of Robin seated at a diner counter

And a coffee to go, please. 01/07/08

Drawing without thinking while on the horn with Ed yesterday. No idea why I drew Robin seated at the counter of a diner. I guess if I was out late, fighting super-villainy and getting into adventures, I would need caffeine breaks, so I imagine Robin stops in to have a cup of joe every now and then too.

I love the whole ’superhero in everyday situation’ thing. He looks very natural. A whole series would be fun!

My one crit would be that the hand and forearm on the counter looks just a little too large and rocklike.

This Robin is a handsome devil. :)

The rock thing doesn’t bother me, but I agree that it’s a bit too big.

I guess even superheroes like a good cup of joe every now and then, eh? Nice work.

Well, if you were out punching people in the jaw and other bony places on their bodies all night, your hand would swell up too. Purely intentionally drawn that way!

Ah, no. I can’t back that up. I screwed up the hand.

Hee hee, you should draw a bag of frozen peas over his poor swollen hand. Crimefighting can be tough when all you’ve got is a utility belt. Bruce never took the time to train the lad that well. I get it. :)

Is “the cape” an artists’ tool for avoiding fine details or is it a whole new nasty can of worms dealing with the rippling and shading?

I don’t think he is asking for his check. Rather, he is making one final point about that post modernist interpretation of the homo-erotic tendencies of Sri Ramakrishna.

To be able to capture all that in a pencil drawing while talking to me on the phone? Priceless

Only if it’s draped around the feet.

I think Robin would feel more comfortable in a gay bar. I’m just sayin’. ;)

He seems like a pretty centered kid, comfortable with who he is and in whatever circumstances he finds himself in. That’s what you meant, right?
