Funeral For a Friend. 01/28/08
My submission for the Channel Frederator “Throwback Thursdays” contest.
There’s a great story in the first 22 issues of the 80s Marvel G.I. Joe comic that follows the Joes dealing with eskimo (inuit?) tracker/mercenary Kwinn. He becomes a “friend” of sorts of Snake Eyes and they cause all sorts of mischief. It ends badly for Kwinn, but he gets some good revenge with “a grenade fallen from a dead man’s hand.”
Snake Eyes and Wild Bill give him a burial at sea, which is the scene for this little illustration here.
Jaime Paglia, Joss Whedon and Rob Kutner picketing in Cambridge. 12/04/07
I didn’t want to let the cat out of the bag on this, so I haven’t posted this WGA Rally painting. Members of the New England Browncoats recently passed on a print of this to Jaime Paglia as part of a gift for his efforts during the WGA Rally in Boston. It was a great honor for me to contribute.
To recap the event, back in December, Jaime, Joss Whedon and Rob Kutner came to Cambridge to lead a rally of fans for the Writers’ Guild of America (WGA) strike. We marched in the snow and raised our voices and our signs.
Shouldn’t the studios have come to their senses by now? Sheesh.
It was a great coincidence that this week’s Illustration Friday topic was also the name of one of the Firefly characters I’ve been drawing lately. Kind of a strange topic, but I’ll take it.
“I can hurt you.” 11/29/07
Just added some Illustrator inks and a little color to it. Thanks for the feedback on the drawing, Angela and Dan. I said it was welcome and you took me up on it. It’s always appreciated.
The nice thing about inking in Illustrator is being able to manipulate the lines directly without redrawing them, so when I saw that her hands were too masculine, for example, it was easy to shrink them down a bit. Same with her beefy arms.
I’m just glad this drawing worked out for Illustration Friday this week.
Update: Ah, looks like I may have misread the topic. My apologies.

I like the 2D animated look. I’ll continue to work at it. For now, here’s Kyle and Donna flying high above the city, conversing about coffee or monitors or whatever.
Beware the Weremoose!
Pencil and Photoshop, 10/25/07
Here’s my submission for Monster Mash 2007 over at Penelope Illustration. Illustration Friday’s “trick or treat” topic, too.
For clarification, the weremoose just finished a tasty peanut butter and strawberry jelly sandwich. It’s hard to eat a sandwich with your hooves!
I submitted this for an art contest at the ComicBloc forums. This month’s topic was Marvel’s “Annihilation” crossover event. Essentially, a villain named Annihilus decides to destroy everything, as villains are want to do. His “Annihilation Wave” takes care of a bunch of planets and he even takes out Galactus and the Silver Surfer. In the end, Nova beats him down and does something heinous to him while Thanos and his girlfriend, Death, look on.
In my pic, the story is the same, only Nova fails! Who’s gonna save us? (J.W.) Rocket Raccoon, that’s who. If cartoonish, green organs make you queasy, you may want to skip this one.
Better Luck Next Time

Feedback’s welcome! I don’t think this one will make my portfolio and I could use help figuring out why.
Outside of the Box
9/28/07
I am exactly halfway through my final two weeks at Big Company. While I am overjoyed to be moving on to something new, this seems like as good a time as any to reflect back on the last seven years. What did we learn? What did we like most? Least? Tell us about a time when we turned a weakness into a strength…
Obviously, a post that promises to reflect on seven years of corporate service won’t be everyone’s cup of tea. So, in summary:
That was fun, but back at it.

The rest is just a long, drawn-out version of that.
