“Page … TWO!” - Paul Harvey
What do you think, could this page be a stand-alone story? You have the protagonist (Shine) pursuing a goal (peace and quiet) while being opposed by the antagonist (the elusive alarm clock.) It’s a difficult, sometimes painful challenge (the photo reference for panel 3 was particularly painful - I’m getting too old for this stuff…), but in the end, our hero is the victor.
I wish you had the narration here. More great stuff from writer Ian.
The Chicken and I have been working on an 8-page story for “Eleventh Hour,” an anthology published by Orang Utan Comics AAM/Markosia. (Look for it in the April issue of Diamond’s Previews.) The cat has helped by making sure my new A3 scanner doesn’t float away. (He sleeps on it all day.)
I’m breaking out the inks and tones on this one, and because of the high production quality of the book, I get to use actual grays instead of tones. I’m really enjoying this project and working with writer Ian Sharman has been a blast.

I’m generally happy with this page - not completely, there’s plenty to fix - but this one feels more loose to me. It’s tough to keep the fluidity once I start rendering, but this one works okay. It took me the longest of all the Chance pages. The writer C.E. Murphy designed the page with words, using a creative layout that was a challenge to draw but rewarding to complete.
I did some touch up to the final panel, fixing the hero’s hand and changing her expression a bit. You can see the final version in my portfolio.
Well, that’s it for the Chance pages for now. I’m really grateful to author C.E. Murphy for the extra attention she paid to these pages, offering helpful feedback, encouragement and great information about the comics industry. Keeping it real by posting some mistakes. This one pains me to look at because the errors are both glaring and the same-old-same-old for me. Thick arm, masculine face, funky limbs. The city turned out nice, though.
I fixed this page up a bit for my portfolio. You can see the final version over in the Comics section of my portfolio.

Update: The final version of this page is in the Comics section of my portfolio. (I fixed the shirt panel.)
This week I’ll be posting my pages from a recent pencil test I did for author C.E. Murphy. She has a cool comic book project featuring a female, batman-type superhero. As part of this “audition,” I tried to gritty-up my style a bit to match her vision for the book.
I got some great feedback from Angela and Dan about this page in particular, and I want to give a hearty thanks to them for it. I didn’t get a chance to incorporate all of the feedback yet, much to my chagrin, but it was appreciated. It was also DEAD-ON! The Lesson: Listen to your pals! More about that later.

I love a three-panel page! It was fun to use the space, add some quiet spots. I usually cram a bunch of stuff up close. This one doesn’t have the claustrophobia I normally make.
Thanks for the feedback so far, friends-o-mine. More junk after the more…
